Memorial Page for teachers from south and truesdell.
This page is in honor of our Deceased Teachers and Coaches.
You know how when you're young, in High School or Junior High perhaps you thought that being teachers was the be all, end all for these professionals? Well, after reading some of these obituaries of these folk who spent their time trying to get things through to us, I am beginning to see them as the human beings they really were. It's sad that happens 30 years after High School and even longer after Junior High. This is a list that I'm afraid we'll have to add too, which greatly saddens me.
One of teacher's we know of who have left us already are Coach Artie Dillon, South High. Did you know that he signed with the New York Giants and was on the team the same time as the great Willie Mays? Did you know he was a real life hero as a Fire Fighter? He also owned a fitness center. It makes me feel bad that I didn't see the human behind the coach.
Gene Washington, Art Teacher from Truesdell, was also a hero. Although with the Anti-War sentiments the way they were at the time it's doubtful he was ever perceived that way by the public as he was a Vietnam Veteran. That's okay, we now know the truth. He'll be our own Hero. He also owned Gene-o's Bar-B-Q in Kechi. He was never my teacher, but wow.
Shirley Gabrielson, Mrs. G to her journalism students, had a Masters Degree. She was a leader in the Kansas Scholastic Press association. Received the first ever Jackie Engel award for outstanding High School Journalism advising. She has also been inducted as a charter member to the Kansas Scholastic Journalism hall of fame. She taught at one of our rival schools West High as well! Did you know that?
Did you know a new elementary school near 31st and Seneca (probably the old Knight Elementary when I went to elementary) has been renamed for "Coach" James Enders? It's a replacement for Lewis Magnet school. He coached and taught social studies at Truesdell, as well as coaching Tennis at South. Sounds like he must have made an impact.
If you know of any other teacher's who have passed away, please email their name, which school they taught at, and when they died to: [email protected]
